The Swords of the Bujinkan -- Seminar 2018
With Dai-Shihan Phil Legare and Dai-Shihan James Cummings
Welcome to the info page for the Sword of the Bujinkan Seminar that will be held at the Bujinkan Taka-Seigi Dojo in San Diego, CA (BTSD | San Diego).
We will start off with the foundations of Japanese sword which will be followed by the battle school of the Kukishinden Ryu. During this school, you will also be learning techniques of the curved-bladed Tachi. Next will be the great sword of Japan, the Dai-Katana, which is rarely taught. You will be learning this weapon in the style of the Shinden Fudo Ryu. We will close training within the school of the Togakure Ryu learning the Shinobi no Kenpo (sword of the ninja).
These traditions were used by the clans of feudal Japan during one of the most violent times in human history. The techniques are from battle-tested and unaltered from the original forms taught to warriors preparing for war.
Below is amplifying information and is more than we could fit onto the seminar flyer. If you have any questions or would like to register for the seminar, please call our team at 858-226-6985 or send an email to email@example.com.
We are looking forward to hosting you for this fantastic training event focused on the Japanese Sword.
Seminar details and amplifying information
When: 28-30 September 2018
Where: BTSD | San Diego, 9865 Businesspark Ave, Suite D, San Diego, CA 92131, there is a map below.
Friday: 6:00PM-9:00PM Fundamentals of Japanese Sword
During this session, we will be focusing on developing your "base" with a sword. Just as the Kihon Happo are drills to develop your base for your Taijutsu (unarmed techniques), these sword techniques will become the foundation for your skills with a sword. They should not be viewed as beginner techniques but rather as foundational drills that you practice throughout your martial art journey. You will learn about Te no Uchi, Tachizuri, Ma no Tachi, Tobo, and more. For this training session, you will need at least a Bokken (wooden sword) with a Saya (scabbard) and a belt. Metal draw swords (Iaito, non-sharpened) are welcome to be used. No sharp blades please.
Saturday: 12:00PM-4:00PM Kukishinden Ryu Kenjutsu (Katana, Tachi)
After the foundation is worked, we will shift focus to Kukishin Ryu Biken Jutsu, the secret sword of the nine-demon-gods school. The Kukishin Ryu is a Samurai tradition from a clan that helped establish a shogun to power. You will be learning some of the Kihon (fundamental principles) of the sword from this battle-school. The first blade studied will be the Katana followed by some work with the Tachi (predecessor to the Katana). Bring your training Tachi if you have one, otherwise, a Bokken and Saya will work.
Saturday: 4:00PM-6:00PM Shinden Fudo Ryu Kenjutsu (Dai-Katana)
The next topic of study will be the Nodachi (Odachi, Dai-Katana), which is a large sword with a blade length greater than 36 inches. These weapons, equivalent to the European great sword, required specific techniques to carry, draw, and fight effectively. A training Nodachi will be the best gear to use for learning. However, a Bokken and Saya can be used as a substitute.
Saturday: 7:30pm-10:30pm Seminar Celebration Dinner
You will have a short break after training to freshen up. Dinner will be catered in to the dojo so we can spend more time with each other. Please register for dinner at the beginning of the seminar so we can get the right amount of food ordered. Cost will be $20 per head. Soft drinks and water will be provided. Bring your own alcohol if you'd like to add to the festivities.
Sunday: 9:00PM-3:00PM Togakure Ryu Shinobi no Kenpo
The last session of the seminar will be focused on the sword of the Shinobi. Also called Ninja Biken (secret sword of the ninja), these techniques will be drawn from the Togakure Ryu and utilize a sword with a katana-length handle but shorter blade length. You will learn many counters to the sword techniques taught and utilized by the Samurai schools. An "Oniyuri" katana is the best training sword to work with but a conventional Bokken and Saya will be fine for training.
Training weapons will NOT be provided. Recommend: Bokken (Katana, Tachi, Dai-Katana), Iaito, Fukoro Shinai. You will need at minimum a Bokken & Saya (wooden training sword with scabbard).
